7 practical ways to take care of your liver
1. Lose weight gradually if you are overweight.
Losing around 3–5% of body weight can reduce liver fat, while around 7–10% may help reduce inflammation and fibrosis. Avoid crash diets.
2. Follow a Mediterranean-style diet.
Prioritize vegetables, whole fruits, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, fish and unsaturated fats. Reduce processed foods, saturated fats, refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks.
3. Cut down on added sugar and sugary drinks.
Soft drinks, sweetened juices, energy drinks and other high-fructose beverages are particularly worth limiting.
4. Exercise regularly.
Combine aerobic activity such as brisk walking with resistance/strength training. Physical activity can benefit liver fat even without weight loss.
5. Avoid or minimize alcohol.
Alcohol can add to liver injury. If you have significant liver fibrosis or other liver disease, your doctor may recommend complete abstinence.
6. Control diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure.
These metabolic conditions are closely associated with MASLD, so managing them is an important part of protecting the liver.
7. Get medical follow-up.
Fatty liver isn't always harmless. A doctor can assess liver enzymes and metabolic risk factors and, when appropriate, use non-invasive tests to determine whether there is liver fibrosis.
Important: Don't start supplements or “liver detox” products without discussing them with a doctor. Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the fatty liver.
If you tell me your age, height, weight, whether you drink alcohol, and whether you have diabetes/cholesterol, I can give you a practical 7-day fatty-liver-friendly meal and exercise plan.
